JLPT December 2026 New Zealand

The December 2026 JLPT is on Sunday 6 December. New Zealand runs three test sites: Auckland, Palmerston North and Christchurch. All three offer every level from N5 to N1.

Applications opened on Monday 3 August. New Zealand uses a paper application process rather than online registration. You print a form, glue two photos to it, post it, and pay by bank transfer before the deadline.

All three December 2026 sites offer N1 through to N5. That is unusual, and worth knowing if you have been told otherwise.

Christchurch is December only. It does not run a July sitting, so this is the one chance in the calendar year for the South Island.

If you want your result couriered to an address outside New Zealand, there is an extra charge on top. Auckland asks NZ$40 up front. Christchurch asks NZ$30. Palmerston North bills the postage when the result is sent.

Payment is bank transfer only at every site. Cash and cheques are gone. Put your full name and level in the reference field, exactly as written on your form. The account name will be the local administration committee rather than the consulate, so do not be thrown by that.

This is a real increase, not a token one. In December 2025 the Christchurch fees ran from $55 for N5 up to $75 for N1. Budget off the current figure, not last year's.

This trips up people who have sat the test in Australia or Japan. New Zealand is still on paper, and the form has rules that will get your application rejected if you skip them.

The main practical difference this sitting is the schedule. Nothing starts in the morning. N1 and N2 run through the afternoon, and N3, N4 and N5 run into the evening. If you are sitting N5, you will finish at 8:00pm.

Christchurch publishes a single check-in time rather than a window, but the section times are identical across all three sites. Check your own voucher when it arrives.

Phones and smartwatches are collected. Mobile phones, smartwatches and other prohibited devices are collected at the beginning of the test and returned at the end. You cannot touch them during breaks. Touching one during a break counts as a violation of the test regulations, not a warning.

The lateness rule is stricter. Arrive after the check-in window and you do not sit that section. There is no discretion at the door.

CEFR on score reports. Since December 2025, score reports include a CEFR reference showing where your total score sits on the Common European Framework. It is reference information only and does not change pass or fail, but it is useful for university and visa paperwork.

Test fees changed from 2026. Both the Auckland and Christchurch pages flag this in capital letters, so if you are working from an older guide or a friend's memory of last year, check the current figure.

Sitting the JLPT in Japan: if you plan to take the test in Japan instead, note that from 2026 short-term visitors cannot register there and mid to long-term residence status is required. This does not affect the New Zealand test centres.

You have about fourteen weeks between the application deadline and test day. That is enough to move the needle on one or two sections, not enough to learn a level from scratch. Pick books that target where you are actually losing points.
