The Japan Foundation Sydney has confirmed the details for the July 2026 JLPT.

Registration opens Thursday 5 March at 9:00am AEDT and closes Wednesday 25 March at 5:00pm AEDT. Popular cities and levels can sell out quickly, so don't leave it too late.

Everything you need is here: test cities, fees, changes for 2026, and prep book picks. One thing first, though.

Melbourne isn't available for July 2026. December is uncertain too. Yeah, we know. It's a hassle. But there are options.
1
Where Can I Take My Level?

Not every city offers every level. This is the question everyone asks first, and the answer is more complicated than usual this year.

City N1 N2 N3 N4 N5
Gold CoastAll levels
CanberraUpper levels
SydneyBeginner levels
MelbourneNot offered

Gold Coast is the only city offering all five levels. Most learners are in Sydney and Melbourne, so that's a bit odd. Affordable test fees don't help much when you're also paying for flights and a hotel.

What Happened to Melbourne?

Melbourne is not available for July 2026. The Japan Foundation's page also notes that Melbourne "might not be offered in December 2026" due to "unforeseen circumstances."

RMIT stopped hosting the JLPT in 2023. Monash University took over and hosted December 2025, but something has come up for 2026. No official explanation has been given. We hope it gets resolved.

What's New for 2026

CEFR level on score reports: Starting from the December 2025 test, JLPT score reports now include a CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference) level indication. This is useful if you're applying to universities or for visa requirements that reference CEFR levels.

Residence requirement for JLPT in Japan: From 2026, you need a residence card to sit the JLPT in Japan. Tourists and short-term visitors can no longer register. International students and working visa holders are fine. If you were planning to sit it during a Japan trip, take it here instead. (No equivalent restriction in Australia.)

Price increase: Test fees went up $10 from December 2025. See the fee table above for the breakdown.

Study timeline: The test is 5 July. Starting now (early March), you have about 18 weeks. N5 from scratch is doable. N4 from N5 is a sprint but possible. N4 to N3 is a stretch. Anything above that in 18 weeks is not realistic if you're starting from the level below. If you haven't started yet, December might be the better target.
