JLPT Speed Master N1 Grammar opens with seven rounds of warm-up drills reviewing N2 and N3 grammar, then moves into Part 1 where N1 patterns are grouped by function: judgment and intention, results and situations, describing qualities, evaluation, emotion, and comparison. Each group breaks down individual forms with example sentences and brief usage notes, followed by 12 practice tests. Part 2 includes grammar exercises using longer reading passages, plus a reference list of N2/N3 grammar. Part 3 has two full mock tests. Answers are in a separate booklet.
Speed Master Grammar takes a drill-first approach. It introduces each pattern with a short explanation and examples, then gets you straight into practice questions. This puts it in a different lane to Shin Kanzen Master, which spends more time on detailed Japanese-language explanations and nuance. If you already have some exposure to N1 grammar and need repetition to lock it in, the 12 practice tests give you far more reps than most N1 grammar books. The warm-up section is a genuine help if your N2 foundations are shaky, which is one of the most common reasons people struggle at N1. The brief explanations do mean that completely unfamiliar patterns might not click from this book alone. It pairs well with A Dictionary of Advanced Japanese Grammar or Shin Kanzen Master if you want both depth and drilling.
