Description

Shin Kanzen Master N4 Grammar reviews lower-intermediate grammar across two parts, organised around the three grammar question types on the JLPT. Part 1 covers 25 lessons grouped by meaning and function: expressing reasons, making requests, giving and receiving, permission and prohibition, quoting, and similar. Part 2 has 15 lessons that show frequently confused items side by side: particle usage, te-form applications, transitive and intransitive verb pairs. The book also includes conjugation drills covering te-form, polite and plain forms, potential, conditional, volitional, passive, causative, and causative-passive. There is a mock test and a separate 15-page answer booklet.

If you've worked through Genki or Minna no Nihongo, you'll have covered most of these grammar points already in more detail. This book doesn't stand on its own as a grammar resource, but it's a useful pre-exam review, especially if you've been away from study for a while and want to find your weak spots. The side-by-side comparisons in Part 2 are particularly good for that. You'll still want a grammar reference alongside this to fill in any gaps you find.
