The Translation and Grammar Notes is the companion book to Minna no Nihongo Elementary I Third Edition Main Text. It is not optional. The main text contains no English, so without this book a self-study learner has no vocabulary translations and no grammar instruction.
For each of the 25 lessons it provides an English vocabulary list, translations of the sentence patterns, example sentences and dialogues, and grammar explanations covering the function and usage of each pattern. Each pattern is explained in detail, with notes on usage, nuance, and common errors. The book also adds cultural notes and reference vocabulary not found in the main text. The introductory section covers the Japanese writing system, pronunciation, and classroom language.
The grammar explanations in previous editions have been widely praised as among the clearest and most thorough of any beginner Japanese textbook. One honest limitation applies to the series as a whole: verbs are taught in masu form first, with dictionary forms introduced around lesson 18 onwards. Many self-study learners end up noting dictionary forms next to vocabulary entries from the start. It's worth knowing before you begin.
This is a very new release, published November 2025. If you're enrolled in a class or school, confirm with your teacher that they're using the Third Edition before ordering.
