Description

A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar is one of the most widely recommended Japanese language references in existence. It covers 208 grammar entries in dictionary-style format, organised alphabetically by romanisation. Each entry includes sentence pattern analysis, multiple example sentences, detailed notes on usage, common mistakes, and comparisons with similar expressions. The book also opens with an overview of core Japanese grammar concepts covering word order, topic, ellipsis, personal pronouns, passive, keigo, sound symbolisms, and viewpoint, plus appendixes on conjugations, verb classifications, transitive/intransitive pairs, counters, and ko-so-a-do demonstratives. Example sentences include kanji, kana, and romanisation.

This is the second edition, published August 2025, and the first revision since the original came out in 1989. The updates include clearer explanations reflecting recent developments in Japanese linguistics, contemporary example sentences, over 10 new entries (including da, naru, and question word + ka), and expanded introductory and appendix sections. The original sold over 300,000 copies.

This is not a textbook. It's a reference you keep next to whatever textbook you're working through. When a grammar point in GENKI or QUARTET doesn't click, this is where you go. It's also useful for distinguishing between similar expressions that textbooks tend to gloss over. A classic and a must-have desk reference for any learner.
