Shin Kanzen Master Kanji for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N1

Shin Kanzen Master Kanji N1 covers 677 kanji at the N1 level. The book is divided into two main study sections and a practice section. Part One covers kun'yomi readings, organising kanji by part of speech and then by semantic category: verbs by difficulty level, adjectives, and nouns grouped by topic such as tools, nature, and economics. Part Two covers on'yomi and special readings, again divided by part of speech and topic. Short knowledge columns on things like sound changes and character composition appear throughout both sections. The practice section contains five rounds of mock exam questions, plus two challenge sections: one on inferring the meaning of unfamiliar kanji, and one reading comprehension passage. Explanations are in Japanese. Answers and a teacher's guide are in a separate 21-page booklet.

This is the most positively reviewed of the three SKM kanji books. Kanji questions are a small part of the N1 exam, sitting inside the vocabulary section, so if you already have a kanji system this book is not necessary. If you have the time and want coverage that goes beyond the exam, this is the one to get.
