Tobira: Power Up Your Kanji

Tobira: Power Up Your Kanji is the kanji companion to Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese. It covers 800 kanji in total: 297 review kanji from beginner-level study and 503 new kanji introduced in the Tobira main text. The book's 15 chapters align with the 15 chapters of the main textbook.

Each entry presents the character with full stroke order, on and kun readings, English meaning, and related compound vocabulary, followed by example sentences drawn from the textbook reading for that chapter. What we particularly like is that more complex entries include a component breakdown showing how the kanji is constructed.

For learners already using Anki or another SRS system for kanji, this book may be redundant. For classroom learners or those without a dedicated kanji system, it keeps everything integrated.

If you are using Tobira: Gateway to Advanced Japanese, this is the natural companion. If you are using the revised two-volume edition (TOBIRA I / TOBIRA II), no revised companion kanji book has been announced yet, so hold off until one is confirmed.
